 立体的なデザイン
あなただけのラブスプーン。如何にもスプーンらしいなだらかで重厚な立体的曲線を基本に、用途に合わせた意味をもつシンボルを彫り込みます。１７世紀以前から蓄積されたウェールズの伝統を尊重しながら、花を使う時は東洋的・日本的な造形でゆたかに表現することを目指しています。
イギリスでも例えばスコットランドのスカイ島（Isle of Sky）には、創作ラブスプーンを彫っている女性がいます。現代的なデザインを得意とし、伝統を発展させている姿が見えます。 お互いに顔の見える関係、つまりスロークラフト／スローコミュニケーションを築いていくデザインが極めて重要と考え、これを心がけて行きたいと思っています。
日本的漆塗りラブスプーン
Walesでは仕上げを通常ワックスを使って行います。着色することもありますが、透明な蜜蝋などを使えば木の色がそのまま出て素朴な仕上がりになります。
ラブスプーン工房「HIRO」では、趣味の漆工房「研悠」のもつ日本的な加飾の技法を使って漆塗りで仕上げます。
玉と鎖の技法
ラブスプーンは一本の木から彫るのが基本です。贈り手が相手との一体感を意識出来る重要な要素です。そこで、籠の中に彫り込む玉（ボール）は当然木の中で彫り出します。鎖も繋がりを示すものである故に、これも彫り出すことが必須です。玉や鎖の彫りには、材料や彫り込む部分によって難しい手順と工夫を要するものです。
材料となる木
日本で入手出来る材料；欅・桜・桂など漆塗りが活きてくるものを使います。WalesではSycamore（楓）・Yew（いちい）・Lime（菩提樹）・Oak（楢）等が普通です。彼我の違いが分かります。しかし、小物については、果樹の繊細さが向いているので同じかもしれません。
漆工芸の加飾
塗りは、木目を活かすために拭き漆でツヤを強調する他、朱塗りなどで華やかに仕上げることも行います。更に蒔絵・螺鈿などの加飾技法により、日本的な表現を用いることで装飾品としての価値を出すことも出来ます。
壁掛け型と首掛け型
Walesで習ったのは、壁掛け型と首掛け型（ペンダント・ヘッド）の２種類です。壁掛け型は、６０cm級の結構大きなものまであります。通常は２４cmから４８cm程度ですが、カーディフ城前のお店ではギネス級の世界最大のものを飾っています。
同じお店に、世界最小のマッチ棒大のものも展示されています。これを作ったのが私の先生で、この細工技術の延長にあるペンダント・ヘッドは細かい手作業が必要で結構手間が掛かりますが、女性らしい飾りになります。

Your own DESIGN with the motifs and the symbols. Cubical design with real spoon feeling and decorative symbols like hearts and keys etc. are essential. Keeping the Welsh tradition from the 17c, the oriental expression is minded hear.
The creative design by a lady in the Isle of Sky is very impressive. She is contributing the modernization of the traditional Lovespoons. So am I. The situation to see the person behind the works is very important and it means Slow-crafts and/or Slow-communication.
Japanning (lacquer ware : URUSHI)
Wax is usually used as the finishing material in Wales, opaque beeswax sometimes and colored at the other times.
Studio「HIRO」 uses lacquer ware (URUSHI) and realizes japanned finishing of the Lovespoons in collaboration with the URUSHI studio 「Kenyu」.
Ball & Chain link specifies Welsh.
Lovespoons are usually carved from single piece of wood to imply a wish to join together. Significant technique and proper procedure is requested to carve caged balls and chain links from one piece of wood.
Material：Wood used
I use zelkova, cherry, lime etc. which are easy to carve and to get in Japan and to make japanning effective. Sycamore, Yew, lime, oak etc. are used in Wales on the other hand. But fruit woods with fine grains are rather common within both small spoons like pendant heads.
Techniques utilized for decoration
Wiped lacquer (Fuki URUSHI) is effective to stand out the grains of woods and red lacquer (Shunuri URUSHI)is great to make the surface of spoons glossy. Decorative works like sprinkle gold and mother-of pearl works are utilized to give a Japanesque taste and value to the carved spoons.
Wall-hanging type & Pendant head type
I have learned two types of carving, hanging wall type and pendant head type. The former is usually 24 to 48 cm long, but sometimes up to about 60cm long. The Guinness Book size shown in the shop in front of the Cardiff Castle is difficult to measure. There is the world smallest spoon shown in the same shop, which was carved by Arthur; the teacher of my Lovespoon. The latter with precision technique requires much time but makes a fine ladylike works possible to be carved.
