 木彫り
2001年度に滞在したイギリスで驚いたのは、手仕事の工芸品が多く、木工や木彫も豊富なことでした。至る所で見かける歴史を感じさせる木の家具が木工技術の基礎にあると理解出来ます。当然、木工轆轤の技術も盛んであり、木工の道具類も日本より多い感じもあります。また、この分野の雑誌も多く、少なくとも８種類は見かけました。さすが伝統の国です。
ラブスプーンはこの様な流れと同根ですでが、一層庶民的な起源を持ちます。しかし、名人級になると王室御用達にもなるほどの技量を有し、表現も芸術性豊かなものへ発展しています。勿論、陶芸も盛んで、イギリス人はクラフト全般を愛でる気風が豊かであると感じます。色々な機会のプレゼントに、世界で只一つの物を贈る。長い文化的な歴史をもつ国同士、もっと交流が盛んになればと思いました。
教室を見つけた、通った、習った。
2001年9月、Cardiffのフラットに落ち着いた私は、自分が習えるクラフトを、図書館で入手したカーディフ市の”生涯学習”のプログラムからピックアップしたのです。その中で見つけたのが、あこがれのラブスプーンの教室でした。事前に面接があるとのことで電車に乗って面接会場である郊外の学校まで出かけ、そこでお会いしたのがArthur氏その人でした。日本で彫った草木彫を持参して見て貰い、中級コースが許可され、約半年通って技術と心を学びました。
実は、最初高名な先生とは知らず、ラブスプーンにまつわる場所を幾つか訪ねるうちに、日本の皇室にもプレゼントを製作した人と知った次第です。それ故か、お年のせいもあり、自分は博物館から出てきて教えているとジョークを言われます。今でも敬意をはらいながら、一人の生徒として日本での活動を報告しているます。
そして、創った。
Arthurには、木の選び方、木取り、彫り方の手順、難しいボールやクサリの彫り方、適切な道具の選択と使い方、デザインなど多面的な技術と木彫りの心を習い、教室の皆さんからも激励を受け帰国が辛かったものです。効率と出来映えの関連や仕上げの方法など、プロ的な発想を教えて貰ったのも大変効果的でした。作品の一つは、日本から持参した漆を使って仕上げ、仲間にも見て貰って彼我の違いに関心が高かったものです。
また、別の著名な作家；Mikeにも遭遇しました。工房を訪ねた時にはデザインの重要さを示唆されたり、１１月の終わりからCardiff中心街の広場で1ヶ月間行われるクリスマス・セールでも出会い、作品を見て貰ったりしたのが懐かしい。

教室では、プロの木彫家や轆轤師も何人か習いに来ており、アマとプロが混在した姿に日本とは違った開放性のある運営を見ました。手仕事の結晶であるラブスプーンの持つ、心を伝える精神がなせる技かも知れません。
地域文化に基づいたスローな表現は、目に見えるアートであり、またコミュニケーションというアートを取り持つ文化性の高いものと理解しています。

It was very surprised to see many crafts like wood working and wood carving in G.B. when I stayed there in 2001. I thought the reason is bases on the wooden furniture seen everywhere in G.B.. Therefore wood turning is also active and many kinds of hand tools and magazines of this field more than 8 kinds were observed. The Lovespoon is originated from a same kind of wood working which was a everyday work in several centuries ago. But the Lovespoon carved by a skilled carver has been rich of artistic so as to be commissioned for Royal family for instance. Also, ceramic and pottery is successful and all kinds of crafts are enjoyable in G.B. so that a fine crafts can be an unique gift in many occasions. I wishfully thought it's much better to have cultural exchange between two historical nations.
Arthur (The teacher of the class in Cardiff)
I retrieved crafts class from the lifelong learning programme of Cardiff and fortunately could picked a Lovespoon class up starting at Sept.,2001, after arrived and settled in a flat in the capital city.
It was Arthur whom I met at the interview room of the school and explained my carving back ground. I was admitted to be a middle class student and learned carving techniques and spirits for about six months with other students. I had realized Arthur is a big name of wood carver who had a chance to carve presents for Japanese Imperial family after I visited many places related to Lovespoons.
He says a joke he is from the Museum. I have been sending a spiritual Lovespoon always and e-mail sometimes.
Works in Classroom of Cardiff
I learned techniques and spirits of the Lovespoon in Arthur's class, which were how to select and arrange woods, carving procedure including ones for balls and chain links, tool handling, designing, etc.. I have been appreciating and missing classmates to encourage and to give ideas to me.
It was very effective to be taught from them about efficient operations for excellent workmanship. I finished one of Lovespoons I carved using lacquer ware from Japan, receiving a deep interest comparing with beeswax polish.
I also met with Mike at the another chance. He suggested importance of designing when I visited his studio in Oct.,2001 and gave me useful comments when I dropped in his stool of Christmas sale in Cardiff.
Slow communication met in Wales
Arthur has been teaching carving ways to professional carvers and turners beside hobbyiests in a mixed and open-minded mode where diversity is valuable in the same class. The combination of hand technique and human spirits may be helpful to carve significant Lovespoons. A slow but visible representation of the lovespoon based on the regional culture can be recognized as an art contributing to communications among people concernd.
