Sapporo New Chitose (CTS) spotting guide

Introduction

Sapporo is the biggest city in Hokkaido Main Island, Japan. The international airport is located the south of the city. You can take photos of most airliners in Japan, Saab340 to B747,  in the good background at this airport. Also many freighters between US and Asia visit for fuel stop. More than 250 domestic flights a day and 40 international flights arrive at and depart from the airport.

How to get there

from Sapporo downtown You can get there by rapid service train  from Sapporo station, 36min, every 15 min, JPY1,040(O/W). The trains arrived at and depart from the station, "Shin-Chitose Kuko", which is located B1 floor in the terminal building. from Tokyo 46 flights from Tokyo Haneda by ANA, JAL, JAS (90min JPY25,200(O/W), JPY48,400(R/T), JPY15,000 to 20,000(O/W special fare, must buy ticket one days before) and Air Do (90min JPY20,700(O/W), JPY19,000(O/W special fare, must buy ticket few days before), JPY9,000(21days before purchase) to JPY14,000(14days before purchase)), also maybe you can get cheaper international connection fare at your travel agent)  Also 3 flights from Tokyo Narita by ANA (op. by Fair Link) and JAL (105min JPY25,200(O/W), JPY48,400(R/T), JPY22,000(O/W special fare, must buy ticket one days before)). Any "Air Pass" (ANA Star Alliance airpass, ANA Vist Japan fare) are available too. from Osaka 5 flights from KIX, 10 flight from ITM by ANA, JAL, JAS (105min JPY31,500(O/W), JPY60,400(R/T), JPY26,000(O/W special fare, must buy ticket one days before) Also any "Air Pass" (ANA Star Alliance airpass, ANA Vist Japan fare) are available. #The fares above are for ordinary season.

The weather is like north Europe. In winter snow piles up few meters and it's cool in summer. No rainy season. Where can you take Photographs?

The airport is very friendly for spotter. There are big observation decks, face to runway, on terminal building. The light condition for runway is good after late morning to sunset. Unfortunately it is closed in snow season, between the beginning of December. and the middle of March. Also you can take photographs from big windows at hall in 3F of terminal building.      Observation deck in the domestic terminal. Located roof top of  terminal building. You can go there via stairs from restaurant floor (3F). Open 9:00am to 5:00pm, free of charge.  Closed in winter. 200mm lens for B747 and 300mm lens for B767 on inner runway. 75mm lens on inner taxiway.  Observation Hall on 3F in the terminal building You can take photos at the observation hall while snow season.
