Thursday, Jun 11 2009One-Third of Medical Screenings Performed Are Not Recommended, Study FindsMore than one-third of U.S. adults undergo diagnostic tests for conditions for which they have no symptoms, which adds to health care costs and increases patient stress, according to a study published Friday in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, Scripps Howard/Long Island Newsday reports. For the study, researchers from Georgetown University and Johns Hopkins University examined health records of more than 4,600 U.S. adults over age 20 from the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey, an annual government report on care at physician offices. Using standards issued by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, the researchers assessed the frequency of C tests -- diagnostic tests for which the task force makes no reco stanley us mmendation for patients without symptoms -- and D tests -- tests that the panel recommends against for patients without sy stanley usa mptoms, because the risks outweigh the benefits. For C tests, including two types of blood-screening procedures, the annual direct medical cost is between $12 million and $63 million, according to the study. For D tests, at least one of three exams -- urinalysis, electrocardiogram and X-rays -- was ordered against recommendations for 43% to 46% of patients, the study finds. However, they write that NCDs can be substantially reduced with simple, low or no-cost interventions, but middle-income countries are not implementing these simple interventions at scale for reasons that have little to do with money.
