*an-a-bhaava-kata, mfn. become not existent, annihilated, n. --amz (ruupamz Tathaagatassa). The often recurring phrase "anabhaavamz gameti",to annihilate, seems to infer that we have to take an-a- in a negative sense, as a kind of stronger negation (cp.Tr. PM. 64,25. who considers 0-kata an error for 0-gata, due to the preceeding taalaa-vatthukata). In Praakrzit a similar use of ana- has been traced in not a few instances, (cp.Pischel, Gramm. d. Praakrzit-Spr. sec. 77). I should, however, be inclined to think that this phenomenon is only a secondary development, having no true base in the original language;thus sa. anabhaavakrzta would mean "made not non-existing" o: brought into a state in which it can neither be said to exist nor not to exist; in this case an-abhaava would be adj. "free from annihilation" (a-bhaava being taken in a kind of positive value, as Fausbo~ll suggests), and 0-kata would be correct. cp.anamatagga.

II 56, 2), but Jacobi and Pischel have shown that anama-tagga must be identical with Praakrzit: anzavadagga or anzavayagga and have taken it = Sa. *a-namad-agra (/~nam) "dessen Anfang sich nicht vera^ndert, endlos" (Jacobi.
