5. VMware

Notice

This document describes how to install and configure the VMware software which can simulate
Windows in Linux as guest OS. " ^ " means " space " in this procedure.

Conditions are;
1) Linux : Red Hat 7.1 (Linux-2.4.2)
2) Hardware : Dell GX110
3)Store rpm package : in "/tmp" (As you like !)
4)Use Ctrl + Alt + Esc to move Mouse in two windows

1. Download "VMware"

Get the VMware rpm package from following URL to /tmp
http://www.vmware.com/ (Current Ver : 2.0.4 on July 06, 2001)

Also you have to get license for 30days trial (free) for permanent (US$300)

Note : Ver2.0.2 can not be installed with RedHat7.0 (I could not)

2. Uncompressed rpm package

$ su -
# cd /tmp
# rpm ^ -ivh ^ VMware-2.0.4-1142.i386.rpm

3. Make license directory

$ mkdir ^ /home/foo/.vmware (foo = your home directory)
$ cp ^ /tmp/license ^ /home/foo/.vmware/license (/tmp/license = received license file)

4. "VMware" Installation

$ /usr/bin/vmware-config.pl
Follow the instruction to fix the directory in which store binary and library files

5. Guest OS preparation

$ vmware

1) Configuration Wizard will be caring up. Select OS type from followings
MS-DOS/Win3.1/Win95/Win98/WinNT/Win2000/Linux/FreeBSD/Other

2) Select installation directory (Ex. /home/foo/vmware/win98/)
3) Select "Virtual disk" or "Existing physical disk" (Ex.Virtual, 2000MB)
4) Select memory size : Default Physical memory /2 (Ex.128MB/2 = 64MB selected)

6. "Windows98" Installation

1) Set "Winfows98 Installation" FD & CD into FD/CD Drive
2) Click "Power on" button on tool bar... Follow the message as normal installation
3) Make VFAT directory in Virtual HDD by c:\fdisk command (Reboot)
4) Format Virtual HDD with c:\format command then install Windows 98
5) If "Windows 98" had stopped while startup ... Do followings

5-1) Set "Windows98 start up FD" and Push "Reset" button of VMware
5-2) Select "Safe mode command prompt only"
5-3) Edit "C:\config.sys" with "C:\windows\command\edit" as follows
REM device=c:\windows\emm386.exe ram (Put "REM")
5-4) Restart Windows 98

7. Modify VMware with "vmware tool"

+++ Windows 98 can be use with above but

a) "Cursor must be move with Ctrl + Alt + Esc and the
b) Display have limitation with VGA (640x480 dot 16 colors)

1) Push "Setting" -> "VMware Tools Install" menu
2) Click VmwareTools.exe in Windows98 A(FD)drive and reboot Windows98.
3) Push MB3 and select Property -> Configuration -> Details -> Adapter -> Advanced
4) Select A:\wins9x (VMware SVGA(FIFO) will be installed)
5) Reboot Windows 98

8. Install Windows 98 applications

Following are the applications which confirmed its function with VMware (By Sugawara)
