Lieutenant Fujio Kawai
After graduated from Naval Academy,
boarded troopship as a Commanding officer for Kaiten Group "Hakuryu"
on March 14, 1945, heading for Okinawa. His naval vessel was sunken
by the U.S. submarine Springer near Kerama Islands Base on March 18,
considered to die on March 30 at the age of 23.
(His name, "Fujio" literally means "a man who
never die" just like "phoenix" means "immortality." Chinese
characters used for his name are "fu" (never), "ji" (death) and "o"
(man).
*Farewell
Poem*
Once
Fallen
Cherry blossom never bloom again
Even fallen
Petals would be in the garden of Imperial Palace
Adore the Emperor forever
(Even though the body of Fujio, "a man who
never die" is gone in Kaiten mission, my heart will be in the garden
of Imperial Palace to adore and respect the Emperor forever.)
