>>>>>>>>>>>>> The File Menu <<<<<<<<<<<<<
File/Open This command opens the selected item in a window.

File/Close

This command closes the current window and releases any resources reserved by the window.
File/Print This command prints the current window in ASCII format. If the display is primarily a list of items, the list prints in a columnar format.
File/Print Table This command prints the table that appears in the current view, in ASCII format. The entire table prints, not just what appears on the screen. This is useful for printing the results of searches, the content lists of packets, or the bill of materials.
File/Quick launch Workfile This command launches the document most recently saved in a workfile, which is a file in your personal folder where you can temporarily save documents from an AIP application.
File/Print BOM This command prints the bill of materials for a part. You can select this print command from the part view.
File/Send for Authorization This command sends a packet from a CREATE state to an AUTHORIZATION state. (Specific state names can vary depending on installation).

ECC consults the routing list to determine who is in the authorization group and displays a dialog box requesting the name of a person to notify in that group. It then sends the packet to the authorization group and notifies that person via e-mail.

File/Ready for Review This command moves a document or part from a CREATE state to a REVIEW state. (Specific state names can vary depending on installation).

ECC does not send e-mail or a WorkManager message with this command. If you are a member of the review group, it automatically fills in the first approval field with your name and the current date. This allows you, the submitter, to also be one of the two reviewers in some cases.

A business rule checks here to see whether this part is a duplicate of another part in the database. (Specific business rules can vary with installation). ECC assumes that changes you needed to make are already complete. If ECC detects that you might have created a duplicate, it asks you to confirm that you still want to continue with the approval of this new part.

File/Send for Review This command is available in the BOM and part views of the part editor. It sends the selected sub-parts and child documents of a part to a group of reviewers for approval.
File/Send Contents for Review This command is available in the packet editor. It sends the selected parts and documents to a group of reviewers for approval. These parts and documents must be mastered in that packet.
File/Release This command changes the state of a WIP (Work in Progress) packet to RELEASED state if all its children are released. The packet goes to the group listed in the routing list for this state. This command is usually automatic, but you can use it when the automatic promotion to RELEASED state fails due to an event such as someone else was editing the packet when the last child part or document was released.

If the item is a part or document instead of a packet, the system releases the item if all the child parts are released and the approval fields are complete and correct. The released item then goes to its parent packet and to all other parts that have this item as a child part.

File/Reset State This command demotes this item to the previous state.
File/Reserve This command reserves the document for you if you have permission for that document and until you unreserve it. If someone else attempts to view the document, it appears as reserved.
File/Unreserve This command unreserves a reserved document.

File/Distribute

This command is only active in packets. It makes a new copy of the packet that is open, moves each selected item into this new packet, and references the new packet in the current packet. It then opens the new packet and starts the send command.

You can complete the send command on the new packet to send it immediately to the group to do the sub-task of the project or make additional notes in the sub-packet prior to sending it. If you execute this command by accident, go to the project view, select this new packet, and delete it.

File/Authorize This command is only active in the contents view of the Packets Window. A dialog box appears with the authorization fields. ECC attempts to set filled-in fields in this dialog box on each of the selected items in the packet.
File/Change Class Members of the CHG_CLASS group can use this command to move documents or parts to another class of documents or parts. Classes are groupings of parts or documents.
File/Send... This command opens a dialog box asking you to select the next person to be the responsible owner. The state of the packet and its contents do not change.
File/Import This command is only available for documents. A file browser dialog box appears and allows you to select a file to import. Another dialog box appears asking you to set the document file type and file comment field. ECC checks these files into this document as the current document. The files previously specified for this document are available as older file entries attached to the document. You specify the document by selecting it from a document content view.
File/Export This command is only available for documents. A file browser dialog box appears asking you to select a directory where you want to export the file. You can also create a new directory using this command. You then select the file from the documents file list or use the most recently stored file if it is referring to a selected document from a packet or part.

File/Launch App

This command opens the selected document in the appropriate native application by referring to the 'Type' category. Your system administrator can link applications to document types. If you do not select a document, the application creates a new document. A dialog box displays all the available applications.

When you select a document, ECC checks it out temporarily and launches the application. It also applies business rules to determine what types of documents or applications it can launch and by which users.

Typically, ECC applies a rule as follows:

  1. If the document is mastered in a packet you do not own, then an error message appears and ECC attempts to open the file as read-only.
  2. If the document is Select For Update (SFU) (someone else is currently editing it), an error message appears and ECC attempts to open the file as read-only.

If read/write access is available and ECC launches the application, the system reserves the document and copies it to your personal folder for modification. Otherwise, ECC launches the document with read-only access.

From the application, you can use a save or a save as command to return the document to ECC control.

File/View

This command opens the selected document in a viewer. All mark-up files attached to this document also pass to the viewer to enable you to see them by overlaying the document. The view file is the mark-up file attached to the parent document whose VIEW_FID attribute matches the File Identifier (FID) of the parent file. ECC checks out the view file to a temporary directory and starts or notifies the viewer application via DDE to "open" the file.

File/Open Parent Packet

This command opens the parent packet of the opened item and changes to content view if the item is a document or a part, or changes to project view if the item is a packet.
File/Open MGEO Part This command is available from the Documents Window. It opens the part associated with the selected document if it is a Master Geometry Document.
BOM Quantity Compare This command compares the Bill of Materials (BOM) for two or more parts.
File/Login... This command displays the login window where you enter a new username, password, or both.

File/Exit

This command is only available in the Home Window. It closes all windows and closes ECC. However, itdoes not exit from WorkManager. To exit WorkManager, select File/Exit WorkManager.

>>>>>>>>>>>>> The Edit Menu <<<<<<<<<<<<<
Edit/Change This command changes an object's mode to update to allow you to change the attributes of the object.
Edit/Create This command displays a menu of items that you can create.
Edit/Create/Part This command creates a new part that you can add to a packet or a part. You can create parts in the Home Window, Packet Window, and Parts Window. ECC adds the created part to the home desk, packet, or part where you executed the Edit/Create/Part command, and enters it into the database in the CREATE state.

To create a part, follow the steps in Creating a Part.

Edit/Create/Authorization Packet

This command creates an Authorization Packet (AP), which is a request for a change to a document or part.

ECC first displays a dialog box asking you to select an AP class. ECC then uses this class to create an AP in the CREATE state and in request form view. You can fill in the request view and accept this packet or cancel the creation.

Edit/Create/Note Pad

This command is available for packets and parts. It launches a simple ASCII editor, either vi in Unix or Notepad in MS Windows. ECC assumes the class is default_doc. These documents do not participate in the release process. ECC creates them in the RELEASED state.
Edit/Create/Document This command creates a new document. Where you are in the system determines whether ICC requires you to specify a packet to contain the new document.

After selecting OK, you can specify the type of document, such as a drawing. ECC assigns a default ID number to the new document, or you can enter a new name.

You can also use the AIP Launch command to create a new document.

Edit/Create/Pre-authorized Packet This command creates a Pre-authorized packet and changes it to the WIP (Work In Process) state.

Edit/Copy

This command is available from packet content view, part documents view, or part BOM view. It displays a dialog box asking you to assign a part number and then creates the new object. ECC includes the object in the database as soon as you create it, and adds the new object to the packet you are in or to the master packet of the part that you are working with.

If you execute this command from part BOM view or part documents view, ECC adds the new item to the part and adds the item to the packet as described above. However, this command does not open the item.

Edit/Revise This command is available from a part or document. ECC copies the selected objects and adds them to a new object. ECC assigns the new object a new number and includes it in the database. The new object is also mastered in your packet.

This command is similar to Edit/Copy, but assumes that the changes are a revision and not a new part or document.

Edit/Delete from Database This command deletes the selected item and only applies to packets in the Home Window.

The normal Access Control List (ACL) setup does not allow you to delete an object after it is no longer in the CREATE state.

When you delete a sub-packet in a project view, the contents of that sub-packet move into the packet where you executed the delete command.

If another project packet or BOM references an item you want to delete, you must remove all references before the system can delete the item from the database.

Edit/Copy & Replace This command is similar to the Edit/Copy command. ECC copies the selected item and then removes it from reference by the packet or part BOM where you are working. This allows you to replace an existing part in a BOM with a different one.
Edit/Revise & Replace This command is similar to the Edit/Revise command. ECC revises the selected item and then removes it from the packet contents, part BOM, or part documents view.

Edit/Add Document

This command is available from the part documents view or the packet contents view. The class selection dialog box appears asking you to select the class where the document you want to add resides. The find documents screen appears allowing you to query the document class to find the document. You can add the document either to the packet or to the part where you are working. Once you select an item, you can add it as a reference, copy, or revision.

You can preview the document by double-clicking the document in the query results window.

Edit/Add Part

This command is available from packet contents view or part BOM view, and enables you to add a part to a packet. A dialog box displays asking you to select from a list of part class types. Next, another dialog box displays that allows you to query the class you selected to find the specific part you want to add. You can add the selected part as a master, reference, copy, or revision.

You can preview the part before adding it by double-clicking the part in the query results window.

Edit/Add Part by Number This command is available from packet contents view or part BOM view. The find by number dialog box appears asking you to select the part to add by part number. You can add the part as a reference, copy, or revision. If you need a more general query, you can use the find like button and enter into the find part query dialog box the class and attribute values defaulted from the part that was selected by number in this dialog box.
Edit/Add Doc by Number This command is available from packet contents view or part BOM view. The find document by number dialog box appears asking you to select the document you want to add by document number. You can add the selected document as a reference, copy, or revision. If you need a more general query, use the find like button and enter into the find document query dialog box the class and attribute values defaulted from the document that was selected by number in this dialog box.

Edit/Remove from Packet

This command is available from the part documents view, part BOM view, and the packet contents view.

Use the top icon to remove either a part or a document from a packet. Use the other icons to remove specific objects from either a packet or a part.

Edit/Remove from Part

This command is available in the part BOM view. Select an item from the BOM of a part and select the remove from part option. ECC removes the item from the BOM of the part.
Edit/Set MGEO This command links a document to a part as a Master Geometry Document (MGEO). Once ECC creates this link, the MGEO document launches when you select the part in other windows. You should add the document you want to a part before setting the link. For more information, see Setting a Master Geometry Document for a Part.
Edit/Remove MGEO This command deletes a link between a Master Geometry Document (MGEO) document and a part.
Edit/Calculate Description This command displays the Miscellaneous Parts window, which contains the new part's description. When you create a new part, this command accepts the system's default description.
Edit/Edit Description This command enables you to edit a system description, including a system default description entered with the Edit/Calculated Description option.

Edit/Toggle Alternatives

This command is available on the BOM view in single level mode. You can choose whether to display the alternatives for a part in an assembly, such as the same sequence number but a non-blank alternative code, depending on your preferences. This command toggles between these two cases. The default case is to show all alternatives.

If no alternatives are visible, the screen does not show which mode is active.
